National Novel Writing Month

Its that time of year again when NaNoWriMo takes over your life for one month only! I'm already started though I doubt I'll make the 50,000 word mark! I'll be very proud of myself if I hit the 15,000 word mark in the month.
I guess some of you are wondering what the hell I am on about. Basically, the challenge is to write a 50,000 word novel in the 30 days of November. There is at least one novel inside of each of us and now is the time to get it out! The idea is to get into Jack Kerouac mode and just keep typing until you're done. Just get it out and then you can faff around with it all you like when you've got the initial version out.
NaNoWriMo keeps track of your word count which you can update whenever you feel and as often as you feel. You can also have a sneak peak at other writers work and chat with loads of other writers doing exactly what you are doing. Its a great learning experience and you'll be surprised by what comes out at the end of the month.

Booker Prize Winner Announced

Kiran Desai won this years Booker Prize with her book 'The Inheritance of Loss'. She is the youngest female to win the £50,000 prize. Judges praised her book as "a magnificent novel of humane breadth and wisdom, comic tenderness and powerful political acuteness". It seems she has learnt well from her three-times nominated mother, Anita Desai.
The Inheritance of Loss tells the story of a Cambridge-educated Indian judge who lives a reclusive retirement in the foothills of the Himalayas. But the arrival of his orphaned teenage granddaughter, and his cook's son's attempts to keep one step ahead of the US immigration department, threatens to shatter his peace.
Though I have yet to read this, I'm sure that it will be brilliant and I hope to pick up a copy in the near future

Death Of A Great Snooker Player

Paul Hunter died tonight of cancer at the age of 27 ( he would have turned 28 this weekend). He was rapidly getting worse lasy week and spent his final days in a hospice in Huddersfield. He had excessive tumors of the stomach and he continued to play until the end (even when he was undergoing chemo!), though he only won one match and dropped from 5th to 34th in the world rankings. A winner of many titles, notably the Welsh open, he will always be remembered as a young and talented player. A true inspiration to all young players. Condolences go out to his wife and young daughter.

The Happenings of My Ladies (and Gent) and Moi

So due to my lack of existence recently there is actually quite a bit going on and has gone on, with my ladies and I. Where to start ....

Lala and I went on a 4-day bender. In between work shifts and shopping sprees we spent 4 nights in a row drinking Vodka and coke and chatting about random shit. Strangely enough we didn't get fed up with one another when we departed on the 4th day we spent a good couple of hours on the fone to each other - as if we hadn't said enough to each other! Was fun though!
Lala is still with her lame-o of a boyfriend, whom I cannot stand but have said that I will get to know if it's going to get serious (which I hope doesn't happen - she can do way better!). Apparently this weekend I'm supposed to be accompanying her when she has to meet his friends - who are probably gonna be complete shitheads - something neither of us is looking forward to!
Moomoo is still obsessed with her but he has more chance of getting younger than he has of getting with her! Also Mark keeps trying it on with her, which she hates and she's run out of ways to tell him that he has no chance. Both go into the way-too-horny-for-own-good pile!
Her homelife is the only thing that doesnt seem to be working but she only has to wait a year when she can be set free and move in with me!
I don't think Lala has read so much in her life, as she has read this summer. Practically every week I have been lending her something new to read. What started out as a simple recomendation has now transformed into out very own book group/library service. This summer she has read Nicholas Sparks' 'The Notebook' (which she followed up by the movie), The Rules by Ellen Fein (to get some tips on how to keep that lame-o James in line and maintain the power she has over him!), Lauren Weisberger's 'Devil Wears Prada' (I told her that if she didn't read the book before the movie came out, I would not go with her to see the movie!), 'Millenium Girl' by Coerte Felske and she will soon be into Candace Bushnell's 'Lipstick Jungle'. I'm sure i've probably missed one but that's all I can remember at this time!

As usual Li's life is floating along with no great breezes blowing her to new places.

As with Cha-cha, well she has not had a good time of it recently. Though the men have been freely passing in and out of her life recently she has yet to settle down with one. The one we all thought she would end up with, including her, was Tim, but he got pissed and tried to lamp her one. She has cut him totally out of her life which we all applaud her for.
Then there was the shit that happened with her drop-out brother. Honestly, he makes mallrats seem tolerable - even preferable. He got a little coked out and barricaded himself in the apartment as he thought people were after him. He subsequently trashed the place and freaed out. He has since been into rehab and is doing well. Hopefully, he will not relapse.
Then there is the job front. No doubt she will soon be leaving us as she did not get the promotion that she has deserved for so long. She could easily walk into a better job with another company its just getting out of the comfort zone thats the problem.
Then the shit really hit the fan this weekend when she crossed the divide and headed to the North. Not only did she get arrested for saying 'fuck' in public (yes that is all she said - imagine what they would have done if she had said 'cunt'?!) but she also found out that she was pregnant. Something that shocked us all to the core a little. Due to the timing being very, very wrong she has decided not to keep it - something I do not condone but accept as its her decision and her body in the end. I'll be going with her when the time comes for support which she will definately need.
Other than that she's pretty good!

As to myself, I have been working hard and playing very little. Uni is definately more challenging this year and so I really have to buckle down. We are short-staffed at work so I'm working all the hours that I have free - I need the cash if the truth be told. With D away at Uni I don't see him as much as I want to, but I'm looking forward to seeing him sometime at the end of this month when we plan on spending the weekend together. It will be so amazing!

Kyle and Amy are still together - now close to 6 months - I'm so happy for them though sometimes I dont need to know every little detail of their love/sex life! He has changed jobs and is much happier now and will return to uni soon.

I think you've all caught up now with the ins and outs of my people and their lives so I'll leave it for now. Updates will be along soon ........

Uni, Work, Sleep and Apology!

Sorry for total lack of existence but been extremely busy. I've been preparing for my 2nd year at uni for the last 2 weeks and went back last week. If i wasn't doing something uni related I was working like a maniac, and if I wasn't doing either of them I was asleep! Following all these crazy reports that women are now too skinny and should munch on a few more doughnuts, which all started by the banning of models at Madrid fashion week who were deemed too thin, the UK has decided to start selling clothes in a Size 0 (or a UK 4). How do these things correlate? The media is telling you that you and everyone else are too thin but in turn are encouranging you to stay like it by offering you clothes to fit your tiny frames! Its totally stupid to be telling you two opposite things at the same time! I stick to what I said before that being thin is fine and preferable, and I support stores like H&M, Topshop etc for providing clothes for the women that are naturally thin or maintain a healthy but slim figure.
Skinny people rule!

Fashion Weeks Have Kicked Off With A Hot Start!

From the hot shows (especially Bill Blass, Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen) in the Big Apple graced by the likes to Victoria Beckham, Mr and Mrs Demi Moore and Ashley Olsen to our side of the pond here in London, where the fashion elite are currently living it up (including Rachel Zoe - the creator of Zombie Zoe-ites Mischa Barton and Nicole Richie). So far the shows have been hot and sexiness has oozed off many a catwalk and into the crowds. We jet off at the end of the week and head into Milan for a few days then Paris closes another, what will be very eventful and inspiring month of high fashion. Looking forward to star spotting in the rows and being gobsmacked at the clothes. A full review will follow when it all wraps up (something we will be doing soon when this chilly weather hits us!)

Booker Prize Short List Announced

The annual Booker Prize short list was published this afternoon and shocked quite a few. David Mitchell's 'Black Swan Green' was pegged as the winner when the long list was announced last month but shockingly failed to make the shortlist. New favorite to win is Sarah Waters' 'The Night Watch' with odds of 6/4, (Ladbrookes) who was previously nominated back in 2002. Others that made the final top 6 are:
- The Inheritance of Loss - Kiran Desai (4/1)
- The Secret River - Kate Grenville (11/2)
- Carry Me Down - MJ Hyland (4/1)
- In The Country of Men - Hisham Matar (4/1)
- Mother's Milk - Edward St Aubyn (7/1)
The only first time novelist to make the list was Hisham Matar with his novel about a young boy growing up in Libya under Colonel Gadafi.
Last years winer was John Banville with the Sea. The winner will be announced on the 10th October.

Banning Models Because They Are Skinny!

Whilst flicking through BBC news this afternoon, I came across this article about Madrid fashion week, saying that models won't be hired if they have a BMI that is below 18. I think this is complete shit to be honest. This will stop perfectly healthy models (just skinny because of having fast metabolisms or whatever) from being hired just because their numbers do not add up! Yes, models can be too skinny but hello, thats what they are paid for. Come off it, but the clothes they have to show off would not look hot (and sizing never goes beyond a 12 anyway!) if they were any fatter. I can kind of see where they coming from slightly with the eating disorder bit and how easily swayed teens can push it too far after seeing completely bollocksed airbrushed pics but all models are healthy and they have to be if they are going to be doing such a demanding job - both physically and mentally. This ban is complete KAK !
Isnt what they are doing a form of sizism? I mean skinny people get completely torn to pieces if they say anything un-PC to or about a fat person, but for those who are waifish to be banned by these bureaucratic meatier birds from such an important calendar event, isn't that way more extreme?

Shopping Cures All

Hey y'all. Just got in from my first trip out of the house in a week so decided to spend some cash and treat myself to a few things. Well, a few things doesn't really encompass the entirety of the spree I took myself on. Maybe I can't eat or sleep but I can definately still shop! I'm totally getting my winter wardrobe together now and hopefully it will be all in as of the beginning of the new semester. So what did I buy? Well, its not quite everything!
- Black fitted waistcoat
- Cream fitted waistcoat
- Black fitted long-sleeve shirt
- White fitted long-sleeve crinkle shirt
- Yellow fitted long-sleeve crinkle shirt
- Black longline crochet sweater
- Two black strappy tops
- Seamless socks
- Lace tights
- Tan knee-high bootstrap and diamante buckle riding boots
- Black rollneck tasselled poncho
- Grey plaid scarf (it's sooooooooo soft!)
I think that's it actually. Couldn't find a bag that I liked but I did see this strapless 50's green and cream layered dress that I might have to pick up in the future.
While I'm on the subject of clothes actually, you should never ever actually wear white jeans anywhere there is or could be dirt! I wore mine today and they looked totally hot until I actually left the frickin' house! I got home and there are red patches/marks all over them that I have no idea from whence they came! So not only should you not wear white after labor day but you shouldn't wear white before either!
Well, I'm gonna go and put my feet up and relax after my hard day!
