Escape to the Country!

Hey y’all! Just got back from my hols and I’m feeling rather relaxed. I went straight up from London on the train after my exam on Monday. It didn’t take as long as I thought it was but it did feel like I was trapped in a cattle truck. There were so many people on the train and most of the seats were already reserved so I had to travel for an hour and half standing in the corner by the door. But never mind it was worth it for the break I got at the end of it. There is nothing quite like escaping to the countryside for a little rest and relaxation. Waking up to the sound of very little except the sounds of nature is quite invigorating. The only things that actually broke the much needed silence was the visits from the RAF Wainscot pilots in their harriers flying over at least six times a day and the odd tractor slowly making its noisy way up the road.

I have to admit that at times I needed to escape from the country though! The nearest shop was at least 5 miles away and that was just an over priced corner shop and post office, and that shuts every night at 7. All the pubs within a ten mile radius shut at 9.30 - yes, that early! - so there wasn’t any chance of a late evening tipple among the yokels! It seems like everyone in the country is in bed with their Horlicks by 10 - if that late! Another downside to the country is the fact that the nearest town is about20 miles away - however, to be back in touch with modern civilization it was worth the trip! Though I do warn anybody planning to head into the countryside anytime soon, take your own fish and chips! Couldn’t be bothered to cook one night so decided I needed to fulfil my craving for greasy fish and chips - it took forty fucking miles to fulfil this craving! Obscene! That’s like driving from my very much inland home to the beach for a bloody portion of chips!

It wasn’t all bad though The scenery is amazing. There is nothing but fields and Victorian cottages for miles and miles to see. As its flat you can see the whole sunset across the horizon - its so vivid, truly amazing. The silence is also golden and the air is so clean - except when driving past a field that has been freshly treated to a bit of fertilization! Although I was in the middle of nowhere I couldn’t spend too much money which is good so I actually saved money! I got a fair bit of reading done and bought a few new books to remember my trip by. The cottages in the area are so beautiful, most of them look like they could be the settings for a regency period drama! My fave was an old Victorian rail station covered in ivy and clematis that has been turned into a house, where the back patio is actually the platform! Truly unique and so beautiful - I want it! (If I find a pic of it, I’ll post it).

I feel truly relaxed and can’t wait to go back. Sometimes its just nice to escape it all and nestle in the country embrace.

So how has your hols been?
